SUMMARY:Southwell Spring Clean
DESCRIPTION:A number of activities to help make Southwell a Cleaner\, Safer and Greener place has been planned for the spring. \nOn Wednesday 30 March\, Newark and Sherwood District Council will be joining forces with Southwell Town Council\, partners and volunteers to give the area a spring clean; from taking part in litter picks and installing new recycling bins\, to collecting bulky waste and holding a consultation on plans for a new skate park; the day is hoped to enhance the beautiful town for residents and visitors. \nAhead of the day\, officers at the District and Town Council took part in a walk-around in the town and located several areas which will be tackled during the spring clean. \nOne of the main areas of focus will be the current skate park on Park Lane which is tired and in need of investment. As a result\, the Town Council will be consulting on the day with students at the Minister School to get their opinion on what the skate part should look like in the future and what equipment should be brought in. \nOther activities on the day include: \n\nLeafleting of cars outside the local schools\, to try to mitigate future idling\nWork over speed safety with both the police and community speed watch\nLitter picking with volunteers and students from local schools\nGiveaway of dog waste bags\nInstallation of new recycling bins\nA Councillor drop-in surgery\nCommunity Protection Officers will be patrolling green spaces engaging with the public and advising them of the controls that are in place\nCleaning in the Market Square.\n\nThe activity in Southwell follows eight highly successful days of activity in the last three years\, including three in Newark and one each in Ollerton\, Boughton\, Southwell\, Clipstone and Blidworth\, which have each been targeted at each area’s specific needs. \nNewark and Sherwood District Council Chairman and Southwell Town Councillor Cllr Penny Rainbow\, said: “We’re really excited about this day of activities and we hope to make a real difference to the local community. We’re planning to take part in many green initiatives which aim on improving the local environment be it installing more bins or doing a litter pick.” \nNewark and Sherwood District and Southwell Town Councillor Cllr Peter Harris\, said: “We’ll be doing lots across the town and I hope residents see the difference we make. One thing we’re keen on getting completed is the consultation on the skate park. We have budget to spend on new equipment and to improve the area and we want the skaters and the scooterists who use that area to tell us about what needs to change.”
