SUMMARY:Plough Sunday Celebrations with Sullivan's Sword
DESCRIPTION:Plough Sunday is a traditional English celebration marking the beginning of the agricultural year. This age-old tradition was revived locally by Nottingham based English Longsword side Sullivan’s Sword back in the late 1990’s and begins with the time-honoured church blessing of a real ploughshare together with prayers for the blessing of the land. It is customarily held on the Sunday after the Epiphany (the 6 January) so Plough Sunday 2020 will take place on 12 January. \nFormed in 1975 out of the Owd ‘Oss Mummers who performed local mummers plays\, Sullivan’s Sword is a mixed longsword dance side specialising in the revival of traditional Yorkshire dances \nThe order of play on Sunday 12 January will look like this: \n10:30 – 11:45 Plough blessing service at St. Denis’ Church\, Morton including traditional songs followed by a dance display at St. Denis’ Church Hall. \n12:15 – 14:00 Sullivan’s Sword and several invited Morris sides will dance in Southwell both at the Admiral Rodney and the Final Whistle. \n14:30 – 14:45 Recalling the Owd ‘Oss Mummers tradition\, Sullivan’s Sword will perform the “Farnsfield Plough Play” (a colourful short play which includes a sword dance) in the yard of the Final Whistle. This will be followed by more dance displays from all the sides and culminates in a traditional music session inside the Final Whistle itself. \nCome and enjoy – entry to all events is free of charge – although we will be collecting informally for locally charity Reach Learning Disability (https://reachuk.org). \nUpdates on our website:  www.sullivanssword.co.uk \nFacebook:  https://www.facebook.com/SullivansSword/ \n
