Lanterns in the Windows
11/11/2020 - 14/12/2020
Southwell Town Council isn’t able to organise the Lantern Walk this year but we’re still giving children and adults the chance to be able to make a willow lantern and to light up windows all around the town, bringing some joy and magic to our friends and neighbours.
The theme this year is taken from the poem by Edward Lear, ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’, so we would be very excited if you could illustrate their story on your lanterns with added festive sparkle! An owl, a pussycat, a pea-green boat, a guitar, a five-pound note, a piggy, a ring, a turkey, a jar of honey or even a spoon!
For those of you who have made willow lanterns with us before or for those of you who would like to make one for the first time, we are offering lantern making kits for sale with materials and full instructions.
A simple starter lantern kit (suitable for beginners): simple shape, pre-prepared materials and full instructions – £5.
An intermediate lantern kit (for those with lantern making experience): un-prepared materials for you to create your own free-form lantern, basic instructions included – £10.
Or make your own bottle lantern for free – Click here for instructions
You can make your lantern during lockdown, as the kits will be available from Monday 9th November. As Southwell Library is closed, to order and collect a willow lantern kit please contact Southwell Town Council Tel. 01636 816103 or Email info@visitsouthwell.com Payment in cash or by bank transfer. A limited number of fairy lights are available too, £2.50 batteries included.
Have your lantern ready by Friday 4th December, to light up with fairy lights in your front window. Display your lantern until Monday 14th December. Enjoy bringing everyone some festive cheer and have fun spotting all the different lanterns around Southwell.
