SUMMARY:Architects\, Priests\, and Masons in the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:The Leaves of Southwell Project presents an ONLINE talk by Professor Philip Dixon; Architects\, Priests\, and Masons in the Middle Ages. The meeting will take place on Microsoft Teams. Bookings can be made via the Southwell Minster website. \nMost studies of medieval churches and cathedrals concentrate on the dates and sources of inspiration for the buildings. In this talk we will explore the links between patrons and builders\, to try to identify the aims of the people who paid for the work and the interpretation of these aims by the workers who tried to turn the objective into stonework\, looking at both religious and secular buildings. \n\n\nProfessor Philip Dixon was a lecturer in medieval archaeology in many universities including University of Nottingham\, Durham University and Christchurch\, Canterbury. Since 1981\, Philip has been the consultant archaeologist at a range of cathedrals including Southwell Minster\, Ely\, Lincoln\, Selby Abbey and Leicester. He has been the director of many excavations including Southwell’s from 1991 to present today. \nDonations: In the current circumstances\, if you are able to we are inviting you to make a donation to hear this talk. Donations from the talk series will directly support the improved accessibility and interpretation of the Palace Gardens\, as well as increase the variety of plants\, flowers and shrubs that we can plant in the next phase of the Leaves project. \nYou will be able to make a donation to The Leaves Project from the confirmation page\, once you have completed the booking form on the Minster website.
