Tuesday, 28 October 2008

Saturday 13th December at 4pm!

That's the time we hope to set off from the Burgage for our third Lantern Walk. Father Christmas will be there,  Bring or make your own lanterns but if you haven't had time, Glowsticks will be available to buy.

After the walk there will be a brass band playing lots of Christmassy music and carols to sing in the Market Square. There will also be lots goodies to eat and drink.

Come and join us! - and then why not go on to the 'Carols for Everyone' in the Minster, organised by Southwell Lions?

Countdown to SECOND Family Funday on the Burgage PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 May 2008

We've now almost completed the planning for our SECOND Funday on the Burgage on Saturday 21 June from 12 noon until 4pm..

Last year's event was a great success and we hope that this year it will be BIGGER and BETTER. Everything starts at 12 noon, so come early to make the most of the afternoon!

Bring along anything you have found/dug up and would like to have identified. the Newark and Sherwood Young Archaeologists have a Finds Officer coming to their stall to help identify any mystery objects you might have. Not Antiques Roadshow - but very interesting. They are also hoping to create ground mosaic with help from visitors to the Funday.

Pete's Gentle Jazz Band will be playing all afternoon and the bouncy castle, fire engine and police car will all be here again. There will also be a stilt walker, balloon modeller and juggler to entertain the children.

There are over 30 stalls which include greetings cards, books, tombola and bric-a-brac and mini 'boules' to keep everyone occupied. To keep you all well fed there will be a barbecue provided by the Rugby Club, crepes from Anna Joyce, ice creams, teas from the Southwell WI and Pimms and a chocolate fountain by the PTA from Lowes Wong Junior School - or just bring your own picnic and chill out!

With the help of participants at the Funday, ArtSpace will be creating a piece of Community Art on the day which we hope will go on public display in the town after it is completed. Our thanks to the Handicentre for their generosoity in providing the base for the piece of art.

The recent Apple Day in October was a great success and attracted many tourists to the town. Most of the shop windows had attractive displays with a Bramley Apple theme.

The next town event is the Christmas Shopping Day on Saturday 15th December when many of the shops will remain open into the evening.

This also coincides with the Lions "Carols for Everyone" in the Minster at 19.30. Like last year we will be holding a Lantern Walk, starting at the Burgage and finishing at the Market Square. This made a dramatic spectacle last year and we are hoping that as many people, including Santa will turn out again.

A very large number of visitors thronged Southwell for the many activities on Apple Day. These included the WI Apple Festival, 'The Big Draw' in the Minster and an exhibition of art with an apple theme in the library (continuing this week)

In the Saracen's Head there was also the launch of a new book which gives a different slant on Southwell. This is called 'S is for Southwell' by Sue Tapply. The book has been completely handmade in Newark and is available at a cost of £5 from the Little Old Oriental shop or directly from Sue (contact via her e-mail   or visit the website ww.thehandmaidpress.com )
