The Safer Neighbourhood Group has been set up to support the Police in targeting the most important issues for the local community in terms of public safety. We have raised matters like anti-social behaviour in the town, road and pedestrian safety and the prevention of flooding and other risks.
At the moment the Group which has representatives of the Town Council, Police, Newark and Sherwood Community Safety Department and local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators is campaigning to get proper pedestrian crossings on The Ropewalk and outside Lowes Wong Schools and to ensure good police coverage in the town especially when behaviour gets worse, such as late on Friday nights.
The Group is about to start a recruitment campaign for some Special Constables who will only be tasked to support the regular Police Officers in Southwell. Volunteers for this new role will be recruited by the Nottinghamshire Police and be given full training. The recruitment will start in the late summer.
Meetings are held in the Town Council offices every two months, so contact your local Councillor if you have any issues you wish to raise.
