One of our councillors recently looked at how accessible or otherwise the centre of town is for people who are disabled, elderly or have small children, and what could be done to improve things. There are some things that cannot be altered due to conservation area status and the historic nature of the town. Such things as pavement repairs, dropped kerbs and general road maintenance are the responsibility of the County Council Highways Department and we tell them about problems as they arise. Some things, however, we could do for ourselves. When cars park on pavements this doesn’t leave room for pedestrians, prams and mobility scooters to get past especially if they are opposite a telegraph pole or similar obstruction, while thoughtlessly parked bikes also block access. Wheelie bins on pavements are another hazard. Please replace yours as soon as possible after it has been emptied. A little consideration and courtesy goes a long way to solve this problem plus there are two car parks where you can park for Free all day. One is at the War Memorial Park and the other (much larger) next to the Minster School, just a brisk 12 minute walk from the town centre.
