What, you may ask, are the Friends of CORA?
They are the Friends of the Community Orchard and Riverside Area and they have come into existance since the planting of the new Community Orchard on land beside the Greet and behind Riverside. The idea for a Community Orchard was first mooted about two years ago by a local resident, Pauline Buttery. The Town Council supported the idea and the area of land which links Upton Road and Station Road was thought ot be ideal. The ownership for this land is now being transferred to the Town Council from the District Council and on November 22nd about 100 people of all ages came to watch or help plant trees which had been paid for by donations. The Merryweather family donated three Bramley apple trees and Reg Taylors who had advised us and from whom all the trees were purchased, also donated three trees. Trees were planted by representatives of families, Caudwell House, the Guides and Brownies, the Youth Centre and in memory of loved ones. Since then two cherry trees, two damsons and a crab apple tree have been planted in an adjacent area. As soon as the footpath has been reconfigurred to improve access from Caudwell House, the wild flower meadow will be sown. This area will continue to mature and will provide al year round pleasure to residents, local schoolchildren and visitors to the town. There - that's who/what CORA is! |
