OCTOBER'S COUNCIL NEWS

The Town Council was pleased to welcome the new Dean of Southwell, John Guille to their October meeting. The Dean told the Council about a series of events which were being planned to mark the 900th anniversary of the start of the construction of Southwell Minster's nave and hoped that they could work closely with the community to raise the Minster's profile throughout the county and the diocese. This in turn would encourage more people to come to Southwell.

The Council also welcomed Nick Thorpe, co-ordinator of the Southwell Festival events and Mike Kirridge representing the Southwell Gate Folk Festival. They described their events last June and were thanked by the Chairman of the Council for the enormous amount of work they had put in and the benefit there had been to Southwell and its residents. the Council will be discussing how best it can support community events at a future meeting.

At its last meeting, the Council expressed disappointment at the rapid failure of the ramps on King and Queen Streets and were not happy with the proposed repairs. As a result, the repairs were put 'on hold' and the Town Council is in discussions with County Council Highways officers to look at possible alternative solutions.

FLOODING: Councillor Haigh reported that he was still waiting for information from some of the agencies involved before bring the Council's Action group together.

A resident from Morton complained to the Council about the provision of play equipment in the town. The Council is currently in the process of buying a new roundabout in the Memorial Park playground and will also be moving the fence to create a shady area for sitting. Plans are also being formulated to develop better adventure play equipment for older children in the park. Unfortunately the Council has had to spend over £1000 on repairing the climbing frame in Norwood Gardens which was deliberately dismantled and damaged by a malicious group in July. This is money which should and could have gone towards providing new play equipment.

Full minutes of Council meetings can be found on this website.
