After the Women’s Institute so daringly took on the challenge of the climbing wall in Southwell Minster (Southwell Peculiar) we thought we’d give everyone the chance to have a go at the annual Southwell Family Funday  on  Saturday  26th June 12 – 4pm.  So get your trainers on, come down to the Burgage and join us for a different view of the Funday from the top of our mobile climbing wall.
If you prefer something less strenuous then we have Maypole dancing from Lowes Wong Infants School, a Youth Jazz performance and the Pop X Winners to entertain you whilst sampling the delights of Thaymar’s Icecream, Tuesday’s Pancakes and The Hearty Goodfellow’s burgers and hotdogs! The WI will also be there with teas and freshly baked cakes.
Meanwhile with your feet firmly on the ground, Sherwood Observatory invite you to take a safe look at the sun (weather permitting!) through one of their special solar telescopes. Southwell Area Transition are running a stall showing us greener ways to live as a community.
Feeling creative? Deborah Sweeney, a local artist, is running a community art project entitled ‘The Bigger Picture’ involving 16 canvases, some paint, a Picasso theme and as many willing hands as possible!
Not to be missed will be all our regular community stalls with fun activities for all the family, the bouncy castle, the fire engine and police car and a chance to brush up on your circus skills with Martin Heaton from The Joker Entertainment. We look forward to seeing you there!

You will remember that Southwell won the Best Kept Village in Nottinghamshire last year. The prize money of £1000 is being used to make sure we have a good chance of retaining this award this year! A new mower has been bought that will be used on the Park and Riverside and a drill that will come in very useful for repairing fences, gates and general maintenance.

We will be entering the competition again this year and judging is between Monday 7th and Friday 24th  June. The hanging baskets will go up early May and this always makes the town look splendid. If you have any ideas how to make the town look even better then do speak to your Councillors.

Thanks again to RWEnpower for their support of local events. Not only has it sponsored the Southwell Town Council Newsletter but has also given generous support for a local event in the next few months. The Town Council applied for and has been awarded a grant of £1920 to put on a special event in the town. The grant will be spent on improving and expanding the Lantern Walk event with extra lantern making workshops and additional lighting on the route of the Walk

Are you a dog owner or a dogwalker? PDF Print E-mail

Did you know the District Council has recently introduced new Dog Control Orders?  What does this mean for us?

In Southwell, dogs are allowed on the following town council land:- the Burgage, the Minster Fields, Riverside and the War Memorial Park. The only places where dogs are NOT allowed are in Norwood Gardens Park and the fenced off Toddlers Play area in the War Memorial Park.
The Town Council is aware there have been some queries about dogs on leads. Some points need clarifying and this issue is being discussed at the Town Council meeting on 16th June…so if you want to comment, please come along to the meeting.
As before all dog owners/walkers MUST clean up after their dogs. Unfortunately we know some people are not very considerate and don’t do this. If you notice any fouling anywhere in the town, do please report it to the District Council on 01636 655571 as the location will be monitored and visited by the dog warden. Anyone allowing their dog to foul pavements, verges or parks can be issued with an ‘on the spot’ fine of £75.

The Town Council has been successful in obtaining a grant to make improvements to the Old Courthouse. This imposing listed building, situated on the Burgage, houses the Police Station, the Council office, meeting rooms and cells. A wide variety of town organisations use the meeting rooms, including the Courtroom, which are on the first floor. The grant from Awards for All of £10,000 was awarded primarily to install a chairlift to make sure people with mobility issues can access the meeting rooms.

The other part of the grant is to improve access to the old cells with the Civic Society having its collection of photos of Southwell in one cell and a display of artefacts collected from around the town being displayed in the other. Look out for information about forthcoming open days.
