At the Town Council meeting last Wednesday, the Chairman of the Town Council, Beryl Prentice announced that she would like a theme of 'Cleaner and Greener Southwell' to be a central strand to the Council's activites in 2007/08.

Bids for Community Funding

The Town Council made two applications to the Notts County Council 'Building Better Communities' fund. One bid was for a proper footpath to Maythorne and the other was to improve the path from Caudwell House along Riverside to Station Road, to make it easier for staff pushing the Children into the town. We have now heard that we were not successful in the first round of bids, so we are asking that our bids now go forward to the second round. we are very disappointed to have been turned down as we felt that they were both very worthwhile ventures.

Councillors from Southwell Town Council and Upton Parish Council are having an urgent meeting on 17th April with representatives from Nottingham Network following the decision to withdraw the service to and from Southwell and Newark. This would mean that the buses connecting Newark and Southwell would every two hours.

No good trying to be 'green', then and hoping to use pubic transport!!

Work is progressing on the bids for regeneration funding for the Town. Potentially this is £98,000 (£49,000 grant with the same as matched funding). The two main ideas which are being pursued are:

  • additional parking spaces around the Market Square area
  • a public convenience in the same area.

Both of these proposals are now being costed for the Town council by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Brighter stall covers for the market were also suggested and got a lot of support from the audience at the meeting. Apparently these are already available and are in storage because the market traders do ot like them and prefer to use their own covers!!
