The Southwell Tourism Partnership has representatives from the main tourist attractions in Town – the Minster, the Racecourse, the Workhouse and also from the District and Town Councils. The Partnership has two main aims. Firstly to help shops and businesses by making the town an attractive visitor and shopping destination by promoting the diverse range of attractions we have here. Secondly and equally important to promote and encourage a range of community events that enhance the quality of life for our residents. The Partnership has the opportunity to bid for funding specifically for Tourism activities – we would like to know your ideas on possible events and activities that could be considered for the future. Look out for information about the Tourism Partnership survey in the October edition of the Bramley.

Safer Neighbourhood Group gets results PDF Print E-mail

The Safer Neighbourhood Group has been set up to support the Police in targeting the most important issues for the local community in terms of public safety. We have raised matters like anti-social behaviour in the town, road and pedestrian safety and the prevention of flooding and other risks.

At the moment the Group which has representatives of the Town Council, Police, Newark and Sherwood Community Safety Department and local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators is campaigning to get proper pedestrian crossings on The Ropewalk and outside Lowes Wong Schools and to ensure good police coverage in the town especially when behaviour gets worse, such as late on Friday nights.

The Group is about to start a recruitment campaign for some Special Constables who will only be tasked to support the regular Police Officers in Southwell. Volunteers for this new role will be recruited by the Nottinghamshire Police and be given full training. The recruitment will start in the late summer.

Meetings are held in the Town Council offices every two months, so contact your local Councillor if you have any issues you wish to raise.

Bin It!! PDF Print E-mail

Do you know we have nearly 100 bins in and around the town? There are more than 60  litter bins and 36 dog waste bins. The Town Council has to buy the bins and replace them when they are damaged – at a  cost of around £200 a time. The Town Council also has to pay Newark & Sherwood District Council to empty the dog waste bins – and at £1.55 per bin per week  this currently costs almost £3000. Emptying the litter bins is the responsibility of Newark & Sherwood District Council so if you see a full bin you can call them on 01636  655600 and they will empty it. If you want to report a problem with a bin then contact the Town Council office and let us know if it is a litter bin or dog waste bin and it will be either repaired if possible or be noted for replacement when funding is available.

Adopt a planter PDF Print E-mail

There are seven planters in the town centre and eleven flower troughs attached to the town name signs on the roads as you enter the town. Would you like to help by adopting one of these? All that is needed is the plants replacing for winter and spring and a little bit of care and attention throughout the rest of the year, in particular watering when we have a dry spell (so not too often!). If you wish to volunteer to look after a planter or trough, please contact the Town Council office.

Emergency Advice Guide PDF Print E-mail
Written by Southwell Council
Thursday, 03 September 2009

Just over a year ago the Town Council produced an Emergency Advice Guide which provided residents with information on what to do and who to contact in emergencies. The Guide was distributed to all households in the town.  This Guide is reviewed annually and updated where necessary. The only alterations that need to be made to the Advice Guide this year is a change to two telephone numbers. These are as follows:- Newark & Sherwood District Council (Emergencies) is now 01636 650000 and the Transco (Gas) number has been deleted and the National Grid (Gas Emergency Service) 0800 111 999 is to be used instead. If you want another copy of the Guide please contact the Council office.
